In circumstances when a tooth becomes infected, we might be able to perform root canal treatment.

You might experience a dental infection as a result of untreated tooth decay or severe trauma.

Advantages Of Root Canal Treatment

  • Life-saving treatment for infected teeth.
  • Can prevent the tooth from needing to be removed.

Symptoms Of An Infected Tooth

Often, there are no symptoms when a tooth becomes infected. However, your dentist will be able to pick up on this right away during a routine dentist appointment (so do make sure you attend these, as they could prevent the need for a tooth extraction!).

You should make an appointment right away if you notice any of the following symptoms:

  • Intense sensitivity.
  • Pain around the tooth.
  • Discolouration of the tooth (as the blood supply will have been cut off).
  • An unpleasant taste in the mouth (caused by the infected matter).
  • Pus coming from the affected tooth.
  • Swelling around the tooth.

FAQs

1. How many appointments does the procedure take?

Root canal treatment typically takes 1 or 2 appointments: the severity of the infection will determine how many visits are required.

During the first appointment, the living tissues inside your tooth (this is called the pulp), is removed, and the root canals are thoroughly cleaned. The tooth is then given a temporary filling. This is to ensure the infection is fully eliminated before the process is completed. So that we can create a bespoke crown to cover your tooth, we will take digital scans to obtain an exact model of your tooth.

At a second appointment, we will check that the infection is no longer present and shape and fill the root canals of the previously infected tooth. We can then place your bespoke crown over the top.

2. Why do I need a crown after root canal treatment?

Placing a crown over an infected tooth improves its aesthetic if it has become grey in shade. A crown will also strengthen the tooth and provide a robust seal against further infection.

3. What If I’m nervous about having a local anaesthetic?

Our dentists are highly experienced in administering local anaesthetics carefully and gently. However, if you’re nervous at the prospect of having this carried out, we can offer sedation treatment, which eases the nerves of even the most anxious patients.
